Liam’s Journey — Turning Spirometry into Playtime
October 14, 2025

How a Toddler’s Game Helped Detect His Asthma Early

Three-year-old Liam couldn’t sit still for medical tests. Each time the nurse handed him the spirometer, he cried. His pediatrician recommended Sparky – The Lung Game, a playful digital tool that transforms asthma monitoring into an adventure.

In the train mini-game, Liam used his spirometer to “drink” hot cocoa and “blow” on steaming dishes to cool them. The same actions taught him to breathe deeply and exhale steadily — essential skills for accurate spirometry testing.

As Liam played, the app quietly recorded real lung function data. His results were automatically forwarded to his doctor’s dashboard, revealing airflow patterns consistent with early asthma.

Thanks to Sparky, Liam received his diagnosis and care plan months sooner — all while having fun.

“He thinks he’s helping Sparky drive the train,” Dr. Nguyen laughed, “but he’s actually doing a medical test perfectly.”
