Blowing Fire with Sparky: A Fun Way to Support Asthma Diagnosis

Four-year-old Emma loved running and playing, but her parents noticed she often coughed after playtime. When her doctor suggested a
lung function test, Emma was too nervous to blow into the spirometer correctly.

Everything changed when she met Sparky, the friendly cat in Sparky – The breathing-powered interactive game.
Played on a
tablet or smartphone with a spirometer as controller, the game teaches children — without them realizing it — how to perform a proper lung function test.

In the game’s kitchen mini-game, Emma helped Sparky drink a smoothie through a straw (inhale) and cool a pizza by blowing (exhale). These playful actions helped her learn how to blow long and steady — just like in a real spirometry test.

After practicing at home, Emma’s next clinic visit went perfectly. She performed the test like a pro, giving her clinician accurate data to confirm mild asthma and start treatment early.

“Sparky made the test feel like a game,” her mom said. “Now Emma looks forward to her lung checkups!”
